Joining the Finance team at Sainsbury's offers the opportunity to play a pivotal role in maintaining accurate financial controls for the Technology accounts and Capital Ledgers of Sainsbury's and Argos, ensuring compliance with accounting procedures and timely reporting of risks and opportunities. As the Finance Manager - Technology Accounting, you will lead a team to support the business in managing costs and achieving financial objectives, while also driving improvements in efficiency and accuracy. What you'll do
You will be responsible for maintaining accurate accounting controls for the Technology accounts and Capital Ledgers of Sainsbury's and Argos, ensuring precise Period and Statutory Account entries. You will prepare Accounting packs for all entities, oversee the Accenture Offshore team to ensure timely processing of technology cost journals, fixed assets, and depreciation, and support in the creation of annual Budget, Forecasts, and 5-year Plan for Tech-related costs. Additionally, you will manage Fixed Asset Registers, production of opex / capex / depreciation schedules, and financial control activities, while also serving as the main contact with External Auditors for Technology cost queries and reviewing processes within the Team to enhance efficiency and accuracy. Your role will involve making decisions related to identifying and applying correct accounting treatment for functional areas and entities, showing strong financial controls and team management skills, and demonstrating a commitment to driving change and delivering results in a dynamic environment.
Who you are
You are a qualified accountant with a proven track record of maintaining robust financial controls and ensuring accurate accounting procedures within a fast-moving retail environment. Your strong organisational and analytical skills, coupled with your high energy and drive, enable you to effectively manage a team and oversee key financial activities such as budget preparation, financial reporting, and external audit engagement. With your attention to detail, commitment to driving change, and ability to work autonomously or collaboratively, you play a pivotal role in ensuring the integrity and accuracy of financial data related to technology costs and fixed assets for the organisation.
Essential Criteria
- Qualified accountant (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) with demonstrable experience operating in a retail or equivalent fast‑paced environment
- Demonstratable delivery of robust financial controls, evidenced by ownership of balance sheet reconciliations, compliance with accounting policies, identification and escalation of risks/opportunities, and operation of formal control frameworks
- Demonstrable experience working with large data sets with the ability to manipulate data in Excel
- Demonstratable people management or supervisory experience, including allocating work, monitoring performance and supporting team delivery
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated through effective collaboration with stakeholders and the ability to explain financial information clearly
