12 MONTH FIXED TERM CONTRACT

About the team

Our Customer Insights team sits at the heart of how Sainsbury’s Group understands performance and turns data into decisions. We bring together financial, market and customer insight to help senior leaders see what’s happening, why it’s happening, and what to do next. Working closely with Finance, Commercial Propositions and a wide network of partners across the business, we translate complex evidence into clear narratives that shape strategic and tactical priorities across Food and General Merchandise & Clothing.

More about the role

As Insight Manager – Business Performance, you’ll be responsible for showing how the business is performing across financial, market and customer metrics, and explaining the drivers behind that performance in the context of the wider market and competitive environment. You’ll create, collate and compile varied data sources (including panel and EPOS) to diagnose trends, identify causes, and land practical recommendations with senior stakeholders—often at Ops Board and Department Director level.

Day to day, you’ll lead regular reporting for Food and GM&C, delivering the periodic Business Performance pack and presenting findings in stakeholder forums. You’ll respond to ad-hoc requests for performance insight, partnering with Finance, Commercial Propositions, Investor Relations and colleagues across Customer Insights to align on the narrative and implications. You’ll also lead cross-functional reviews of key activity—from major customer events such as Christmas and Easter to price investment—bringing together evidence across internal and external sources.

A key part of the role is looking beyond Sainsbury’s Group to identify and leverage external data sources that strengthen our understanding of performance. You’ll scan for future trends that may impact the market and competitors, sharing timely insight that supports forward planning. You’ll manage team resource (including embedded partners and agencies), prioritise workloads within existing governance, and coach and develop C4 Insight Executive(s).

More about you

You bring strong, hands-on experience working with business performance data and research fundamentals, with the ability to integrate multiple sources into a coherent story. You’re confident using panel and EPOS data creatively to answer business questions, and you know how to link customer, commercial and financial drivers to explain “what’s moved” and “why”.

You’re comfortable influencing senior stakeholders, building trusted relationships across functions, and presenting insight in a way that cuts through. You work in a hypothesis-led way to break down complex problems, challenge assumptions, and communicate clear recommendations. You’re also practical and open to test-and-learn approaches—supporting experimentation, scaling what works, and encouraging adoption of self-serve tools so data is accessible and used across teams.

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse and interpret EPOS and panel data to explain business performance and its drivers.
  • Experience producing performance reporting packs (e.g., weekly/monthly/periodic) and presenting insights to senior stakeholders.
  • Evidence of integrating multiple data sources (financial, customer, market and/or research) into clear narratives and recommendations.
  • Experience leading cross-functional reviews (e.g., trading events, pricing initiatives, category performance) with defined outputs and actions.
  • Experience coordinating delivery through a mix of internal partners and external agencies, including prioritisation and governance.
